On My Radar #1
Welcome to Issue #1 of On My Radar! I've decided to start this series of (hopefully) regular posts that highlights my plans for the week/month/insert-other-period-of-time that I can rely on with some regularity or come back to if I have nothing else to write about. If nothing else, it's letting me explore more of Bear's featureset and get better at this whole blogging thing. This is my equivalent to a kind of "Link Roundup" or "Weekly Recap" that some other bloggers do.
So, here's a first attempt at structuring one of these. I'll try and put it in sections.
Things that happened this week:
- I'm now halfway through year 10! Looking forward to this 3-week break.
- Published my second blog post on this website! It's really good to feel like I'm actually doing this blog thing, even if I haven't actually shared it with anyone yet.
- I moved my primary browser from Arc to Orion. I've grown uncomfortable with the recent AI stuff happening over at The Browser Company, but haven't had time to fully switch away, until last week. Honestly, Arc's lack of an "export bookmarks" feature is just really annoying. It's the only reason I hadn't already moved away, but I'd found a neat little utility that did it for me.
Things I'm planning to do this week (or soon)
- Write more blog posts! I'll be writing some new stuff, but I've got some old drafts lying around that I want to do something with.
- Work on the CSS and theming for this site. I'm hoping to make this more of a unique site, rather than just a colour/font change of the default bear theme.
- I've been thinking about migrating Mastodon instances from mastodon.social to something else. I've heard some people say that being on the biggest instance defeats the whole purpose of a decentralised social network, and that kind of makes sense. I think I've found where I want to move to, but I'm just making sure It'll be all good. I'll likely write a blog post about it at some point.
- Work more on my personal and project websites. While I'm using Bear for my blog and love how simple it is to make pages, I don't want to be limited by It for an actual personal website. I've been making them from scratch and borrowing ideas from other people's sites, I'm looking forward to properly sharing it when It's closer to finished.
- Organise a new system in Obsidian to save links and ideas. I'm going to do it so I have a more streamlined approach to round things up for each issue. My notes system is a bit messy at the moment, because I have so many apps handling my notes at the moment. I think I'll be diving back into the community plugin library soon to build back my whole connected notes system. At the moment Obsidian is just a pretty frontend for my notes folder, but I'm hopefully going to add back actual functionality to it at some point.
- Share this blog somewhere. It'll be really validating to me when I actually show someone what I've been doing.
Favourite articles and links from the week
- Everything Can Be Fixed: I don't know how long ago I watched it, but this video from Chris Titus is a good reminder that the web isn't just lost into the hands of all these big companies.
- BlogBoost: Robert Birming is one of the people who has recently inspired me to actually get moving with this blog, and I really like how well thought-out his new shortcut is. I'll definitely be using this in the future when I need a little extra motivation for blogging.
- Crafting My BearBlog: Brandon's customisation of his blog is pretty cool. It seems like he'll never run out of things to add to his blog, and I'm here for it.
- The Forged Apple Employee Badge: This one's from a while ago, but since I'm digging around for links for this first issue, I might as well put it here. It's a crazy story that's worth reading if you have the time.
Anyway, That should be all for this week. I probably rambled a bit here, and I'll hopefully have a more polished issue next week, but I'm pretty happy with this for the moment.
bye for now 😶🌫️
